Ankle Inversion

Definition

The movement of the sole of the foot turning inward, toward the midline. A component of supination. Normal inversion range is approximately 30-40 degrees. Measured with the ankle in neutral position. Excessive inversion laxity is a risk factor for lateral ankle sprains.

Clinical Significance

Ankle inversion range and control are critical for understanding lateral ankle instability. Chronic ankle sprains often leave residual inversion laxity with decreased eversion strength, creating a recurrent instability pattern. Assessment of inversion ROM also contributes to understanding subtalar joint mechanics and their influence on the kinetic chain above.

How AKMI Assesses This

AKMI measures ankle inversion ROM bilaterally in seated position. The measurement is compared between sides and correlated with a history of ankle sprains, lateral ankle stability, and supination tendency during gait assessment.
