Diaphragmatic Breathing Assessment
Setup
Client supine, hook-lying. One hand on the chest, one hand on the abdomen (just above the navel). Camera from the side.
Cueing
Step 1: 'Breathe normally through your nose. Do not try to change anything.' Step 2: Observe 10 breaths. Which hand moves more? Ideal: abdominal hand rises MORE than chest hand on inhale (diaphragmatic pattern). Step 3: Note: breath rate (normal: 12-20/min), breath hold time after normal exhale (>25 s = good), audible breathing (should be silent through nose). Scoring: 5 = pure diaphragmatic, slow, silent, 360-degree expansion. 4 = predominantly abdominal with minimal chest. 3 = mixed pattern. 2 = predominantly chest. 1 = apical/clavicular pattern only.
Measurement
Scale 1-5. Also record: breaths per minute, breath hold time (seconds), pattern classification.
