Resonance Frequency Breathing Assessment
Setup
Client seated comfortably. HRV biofeedback device if available (Elite HRV, Garmin, or similar). Timer visible to the client. Quiet environment with minimal stimulation.
Cueing
Step 1: Establish resting heart rate and breathing rate baseline (2 minutes quiet breathing). Step 2: Guide the client through paced breathing at different rates: 6.5, 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, 4.5 breaths per minute. Each rate is sustained for 2-3 minutes. Step 3: If using HRV, identify the rate that produces the highest HRV amplitude (resonance frequency). Step 4: If no HRV device, use subjective comfort -- which rate feels most natural and calming.
Measurement
Record: resting breathing rate, resting heart rate, identified resonance frequency (breaths per minute), HRV amplitude at resonance if available. This becomes the client's personalized breathing prescription for reset protocols and pre/post session breathing.
