Gait Timing, Rhythm, and Delay Assessment
Setup
Client walking at their natural pace. Camera captures full body from anterior and lateral views. At least 20 gait cycles.
Cueing
Step 1: Observe the timing between heel strike and mid-stance loading -- is there a smooth transition or an abrupt impact? Step 2: Observe the rhythm -- are the step lengths and timing symmetrical? Step 3: Observe the delay -- the key concept of effortless walking is the delay between stance phases. Can the client 'pause' in mid-stance without rushing to propulsion? Step 4: Note: excessive pace, trunk rigidity, breath holding during walking, excessive visual fixation on the floor.
Measurement
Free text describing: timing quality (smooth/abrupt), rhythm symmetry (L vs R step length and duration), delay capacity (present/absent/asymmetrical), compensatory patterns (trunk rigidity, breath holding, floor staring). Rate overall gait quality on 1-10 scale.
